Lecture Preview | “Duntou Blue” — Dyeing Techniques and Hakka Culture
The Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies invites Dr. Li Yinguang to unravel the cultural codes of blue dyeing. Join us for a dialogue that bridges craftsmanship and humanity. Traditional Chinese blue dyeing is deeply rooted in folk culture, while Hakka Duntou Village's unique "Duntou Blue," made from Strobilanthes cusia, has preserved its pure indigo hue for centuries. This shade of blue not only embodies the Hakka spirit of frugality and durability but was also used in dyeing official garments during the Qing Dynasty, reflecting the Confucian tradition of “devotion to both study and farming.”
