Master of Social Sciences in Smart Cultural Tourism

Programme Overview

The Master of Social Sciences in Smart Cultural Tourism (MSSc-SCT) adopts a unique interdisciplinary approach built on two core foundations: comprehensive domain knowledge of cultural tourism and practical smart technology application skills. This integration creates a powerful synergy, enabling cultural content to be translated into meaningful tourism experiences while smart technologies significantly enhance tourists cultural engagement.

The MSSC-SCT programme aims to cultivate future professionals who can bridge culture and technology to drive innovation in delivering in-depth cultural experiences supported by smart digital solutions. Smart technologies, such as VR/AR, and AI including digital twins, are reshaping how cultural experiences are produced and delivered, creating a rapidly evolving ecosystem across the cultural tourism sector and creative industries. In response to market needs and current government policy directions, the curriculum design of the MSSc-SCT incorporates a series of core and elective courses specifically designed to nurture talent in these areas.

Graduates will develop a distinctive interdisciplinary skill set that combines technological proficiency with expertise in cultural tourism. This blend of competencies prepares them for diverse career pathways across the cultural tourism sector, cultural and creative industries, and government departments engaged in cultural policy and sustainability initiatives.

Human-Centred Research Methodology

In the final stage of the MSScSCT programme, specially the second semester for full-time students and the fourth semester for part-time students, students are expected to have successfully completed a minimum of 15 credits and 21 credits, respectively. At this stage, they will undertake advanced study in research methodology and carry out a research-informed project focused on evidence-based cultural tourism management and planning. To equip students with the theoretical and methodological skills needed for research project formulation and implementation, a core course entitled “SCT504 Human-Centred Research Methodology”, which serves as a prerequisite for the subsequent core course, “SCT505: Master Project: Cultural Tourism and Technology Studio”, will be introduced. This course is designed to support students in developing their human-centred interdisciplinary research project topics, while fostering higher levels of intellectual ability, critical analysis, rigour, and independent thinking.

Research-Informed Project in Smart Cultural Tourism

In the final semester, MSSc-SCT students will be required to undertake an individual capstone project through SCT505 Master Project: Cultural Tourism and Technology Studio. This master project offers students the opportunity to apply scientific research methodologies, experiment with creative cultural content development, and innovatively address real-world challenges in the field of smart cultural tourism.

Through active engagement in the project, students will strengthen their professional practice and develop comprehensive research skills. The course also fosters entrepreneurial incubation potential, encouraging students to explore how their innovative ideas and prototypes may be transformed into viable business solutions within the cultural tourism sector. Emphasis is placed on cultivating individual judgment and proficiency in applying relevant theories and research methods, ensuring that students are well prepared to manage and complete high-quality research and practice-oriented projects.

Non-credit-bearing Industrial Field Trip and Industrial Placement (Optional)

Students will have the option to join a non-credit-bearing industrial field trip during the winter or summer break, involving 1~3-day visits to local, regional, or overseas cultural tourism enterprises. Financial support will be provided. The field trip enables students to engage directly with industry professionals, gain valuable insights and networking opportunities, and develop an applied understanding of cultural tourism management and implementation.

Students may also opt for a non-credit-bearing internship during the summer break, offering a longer and more immersive industry experience (typically 34 weeks). Through placements with cultural tourism organisations, students will apply academic knowledge to real-world projects and develop professional skills in cultural tourism management, planning, and innovative content development.

To facilitate these opportunities, the Department is establishing agreements with companies and organisations and actively expanding its industry network locally, regionally, and internationally.
