Programme-specific Admission Requirements

The MPhil applicant should:

● Possess a bachelor degree in sociology or anthropology

The PhD applicant should:

● Possess a Master degree in sociology or anthropology

Highlights of MPhil/PhD Programmes in Sociology:

● Vigorous graduate training in sociology

● A broad range of specializations, including cultural heritage, community development, migration and globalization, economic sociology, youth problem, drug abuse, etc.  

● Emphasis on interdisciplinary approach in research involving a variety of perspectives such as sociology, anthropology, demography, criminology, and social psychology

Financial Assistance

Studentship
Postgraduate Studentships of the amount HK$15,000 per month will be awarded to students who are enrolling in full-time mode and within their normative study periods.

The job duties of studentship recipients may include teaching and research assistant. The maximum working hours will be 12 hours per week.
 
Student Financial Assistance and Scholarships

“Extended Non-means-tested Loan Scheme (ENLS)
Students can apply for financial assistance in the form of a government tuition fee loan, under the “Extended Non-means-tested Loan Scheme (ENLS)” administered by the Working Family and Student Financial Assistance Agency. TML Scholarship Scheme
All full-time research graduate students are invited to apply for the TML Scholarship. Successful applicants would receive HKD5,000 per month in their first year and HKD2,500 per month in subsequent years (total 4 years for PhDs and 2 years for MPhils).

Special Subsidy
All MPhil and PhD students in full-time mode will be entitled to free accommodation in the postgraduate hostel for the first semester.

Progression of Study

For MPhil students, there is a probationary period of 12 months. Students are required to submit a detailed thesis proposal and pass the defence of the proposal in a seminar before the end of the probationary period. Students who fail to do so will be required to discontinue their study.

For PhD students, there is a probationary period of 18 months. Students are required to submit a detailed thesis proposal and pass the defence of the proposal in a seminar before the end of the probationary period. Students who fail to do so will be required to discontinue their study. Students entering with an MPhil would normally enrol in a three-year PhD programme, whereas those entering from taught masters programmes would enrol in a four-year PhD programme.
