Dr. Weishan Huang was appointed Vice President of the East Asian Society for the Scientific Study of Religion (EASSSR)

 

Hong Kong, August 1, 2026 — Dr. Weishan Huang, Associate Professor at Hong Kong Shue Yan University, has been appointed Vice President of the East Asian Society for the Scientific Study of Religion (EASSSR) for the 2026–2028 term. She joins a new leadership team that includes President Andre Laliberté (University of Ottawa, Canada), Past President David A. Palmer (University of Hong Kong, China), and General Secretary C. Julia Huang (National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan).

 

EASSSR is an international academic society dedicated to advancing the social scientific study of religion in East Asia. Established to foster meaningful communication among scholars, the society emphasizes empirical research that situates religion within East Asian contexts, moving beyond frameworks traditionally shaped by Western Protestant norms.

 

The announcement follows the 8th Annual Conference of EASSSR, held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, from July 1 to 4, 2026. The conference theme, Religion and Digital Worlds: Dynamics of Religious Adaptation, Resilience, and Innovation, brought together scholars from East Asia, Southeast Asia, North America, and Europe.
