Department of Sociology and Social Research Centre worked together to organize a mini-conference entitled “Contemporary Relevance of Time-honoured Business in Chinese Societies” from 26 to 27 September, 2025 at HK Shue Yan University (HKSYU). This conference brings together nine scholars working on time-honoured businesses (laozihao, 老字號) from different prestigious research institutions, including Prof. ZHANG Jijiao (a leading researcher from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, CASS and a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference 全國政協委員), Prof. WEN Xueguo (an expert in law and business from Shanghai University), Prof. CHEN Jingwei (an expert in corporate finance from CASS), Dr. GAO Chong and Dr. Ni Na NG Camellia from HKSYU, two PhD candidates from University of CASS, one PhD candidates from Tsinghua University and one from Yunnan University. They investigate time-honoured businesses in Beijing, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Yunnan, and other cities/provinces to examine the relational process and multiple ways of connecting laozihao businesses to contemporary socioeconomic conditions. In this regard, the new focus on contemporary relevance of laozihao helps to rethink it as a new case of business for good. In addition, the presenters will make efforts to publish a Special Issue with International Journal of Anthropology and Ethnology (Scopus indexed) in the near future.
